How to Choose Carbon Road Rim Depth (30–80mm)？

A simple depth map

• 30–40mm: climbing, training fleets, windy markets, builds where weight matters more than aero.
• 45–55mm: what most road customers end up on—workable on mixed terrain without being twitchy in gusts.
• 60–80mm: flat crits, triathlon/TT, aero kits. Fine if the market rides open roads; less ideal as the only SKU in a gusty mountain region.

Our road molds (disc and rim-brake) commonly cover 30/35/38/40/45/50/55/60/75mm; other depths are possible if the order supports a mold run. For a first retail assortment, a lot of buyers put 45–50mm in the middle of the range—easier to sell when customers ride different roads.

Depth is not the only decision

Road rims got wider. Pairing a modern external width (often in the mid-20s mm range, check the exact model) with 28–32mm tires usually rides better and rolls well. Settle clincher/tubeless vs tubular early; for most OEM programs now, tubeless-ready clincher is the default ask.

Also pick rim-brake or disc first. Heat on the brake track, hub standards (12x100 / 12x142 vs QR), and typical spoke counts are not interchangeable. Changing this mid-project means redoing hubs, rotors, and often the whole marketing kit.

Rider weight, spokes and hubs

Heavier riders, winter trainers, or loaded touring should not start from an ultra-deep, ultra-light race build. Raise spoke count, pick a proven hub, and stay in mid-depth unless the customer specifically wants a TT wheel. We build with Novatec and other hub options, Sapim / Pillar / CN spokes, and Shimano or SRAM XD/XDR freehub bodies—say what the market already stocks so spare parts are easy.

If you are launching a brand line
Three SKUs cover most shelves: ~38mm climb, ~50mm all-round, ~60mm aero. Limit finishes on the first run (UD matte + UD glossy is enough). Add fancy logo options after you see what actually sells.

FAQ
Q: Is deeper always faster?
A: On steady flat days, usually yes. On gusty mountain descents, many riders go faster on mid-depth because they can hold a line. Lab aero numbers are not the whole ride.

Q: Can I use one road depth for gravel too?
A: Better to use a gravel rim with wider internal width (around the 28mm class). Forcing a narrow road rim onto wide gravel tires is a common complaint later.
